Watercolor is a new hobby I took up during quarantine. It has taught me about control, letting go of perfectionism, and experimentation.

What have I learned?

Patience is important in watercolor. You must paint layer by layer, slowly adding to the paper each time it dries. You need to be strategic about what the priority is.

These paintings are rather weird looking right until the details are added at the end. It can be uncomfortable to sit with, but is a good exercise in building from the bottom up.

Countless hours, mistakes, and details went into making this fish. This was the third time I had practiced the koi. The watercolors come out differently each time, so I give up some control.

A lot of planning goes in.

This is the view of Back Bay from my Boston apartment. It took quite a few tries and some strategic erasing and blank space to get right. To paint, I had to erase anyway!

This is it after two separate 4 hour sessions. I could continue and add more, but have hesitated because it may not improve the painting. Knowing when to stop is important.

Making the most!

My learning style is to watch others do, do with them, and then do alone. Watercolor tutorials have been a great resource for me to practice and grow!

P.S. This is Samson. I love him dearly.
